Year 6 Weekly News – 9th January 2026
Welcome Back!
The Year 6 team hopes you had a fantastic two-week break and are ready for an exciting term ahead.
Personal Development Day
We started the week with a focused day on Personal Development. This term’s theme is Enterprise—exploring what it means to be an entrepreneur and developing enterprise skills.
The children:
- Investigated what makes a successful entrepreneur and learned about some famous examples.
- Explored spending decisions and the impact of ethical spending.
- Discussed economic sustainability and how it affects communities worldwide, creating presentations to share their ideas with peers.
6R freeze framing what success looks like.
English
This week, we introduced our new text: The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes—a narrative poem rich in literary devices such as similes and metaphors, and themes of love, betrayal, and fate.
The children finished the week by writing their first piece based on the text: a setting description of the opening scene, focusing on creating atmosphere through language choices.
Maths
We began our new topic: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages—essential knowledge for KS2 SATs and a strong foundation for KS3.
The children will use prior number knowledge to:
- Find equivalences between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Apply this understanding to a range of problems.
Thematic
Next week, we start our new thematic unit: How to Mind Your Heart.
Children will:
- Learn about the human circulatory system, including the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
- Explore how lifestyle choices—such as diet—impact the body and its functions.
Homework
- Reading: Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
- Accelerated Reader: Children have a ZPD to guide book choices. After finishing a book, they should complete a quiz (in school or at home via Accelerated Reader using their login details).
- Times Tables: Play TTRS at least 3 times a week to build fluency.
- Mathletics: Homework set—due Friday.
- Thematic Homework: See the homework menu below. Due 6th February 2026.
- Spellings: Choose 10 spellings each week to practise using the format shown in the book.

Thank you for your continued support!
