English:
This week in English, we began our new text ‘I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens 1980’, which is a fictional story centred around the real-life eruption of Mount St. Helens. The children focused on identifying main and subordinate clauses during PaG tasks and thought about the author’s use of flashforwards to begin the book. In writing, the children wrote a character description of the Skeleton Woman, including rich and varied vocabulary to create an appropriate atmosphere.
Next week we will continue to read our text and will write a comparative setting description of the volcano before and after the eruption.
Maths:
In maths this week, we recapped division. Firstly, we used partitioning to divide mentally and then used the ‘bus stop’ method as a formal written method.
Next week we will begin our new unit focusing on fractions.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week during our afternoon lessons, we focused on personal development through a range of PSHE and online safety sessions. We looked at how and why we spend money, how we can keep track of what money we have and the difference between a want and a need. We also looked at different charities, both national and local, to explore what they do to help others and why charities are important.
On Friday afternoon, we welcomed representatives from local charities to speak to the children about the work they do and how people can help. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Holly from Thanet Disabled Riding Centre, Jayne from Mama to Mama and Kerry from Broadstairs Town Team for coming in to talk to the children about their amazing work.

Next week we will begin our new topic about earthquakes and volcanoes. We will look at what causes earthquakes and how volcanoes are formed and why they erupt.
