One Childhood - One Chance

16.1.26 Year 5 Weekly News

Term 3 Week 2

English

This week has been a fantastic journey into the world of the Anglo Saxons! The children had a wonderful time drawing their very own Anglo-Saxon farm, which sparked their creativity and imagination. Afterward, we gathered a rich vocabulary to describe their drawings, focusing on the details that bring their artwork to life.

To enhance their writing skills, the children crafted setting descriptions that incorporated relative clauses, helping them create more complex and engaging sentences. It was delightful to see them apply their learning in such a meaningful way!

Looking ahead to next week, we will embark on an exciting new project: writing a newspaper report about an event from our current book. This will not only develop their writing skills further but also encourage them to think critically about storytelling and reporting. I can’t wait to see what they produce!

Maths

This week in class, we’ve been diving into the fascinating world of fractions! Our focus has been on comparing and ordering fractions, rounding decimals, and understanding how fractions relate to division. It’s been wonderful to see the students engage with these concepts, using practical examples to enhance their understanding.

Next week, we’re excited to kick off our new unit on angles! We’ll explore different types of angles and how to measure them, making connections to real-life situations. I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for angles in the world around us—whether it’s in architecture or nature.

Thematic

This week, our classrooms have been buzzing with excitement as the children embarked on their topic of the Anglo-Saxons! They’ve been learning about how and why the Anglo-Saxons came to England, diving into the fascinating details of life on an Anglo-Saxon farm. The children have discovered the various job roles that different people had, from farmers to craftsmen, and how these roles contributed to their communities.

Next week promises to be just as thrilling as we plan our visit to Canterbury Cathedral. This historical site will provide a wonderful backdrop for continuing our exploration of Anglo-Saxon life. Additionally, the children will have the chance to unleash their creativity by creating their own Anglo-Saxon farms and jewellery. It’s a fantastic opportunity for hands-on learning that will surely deepen their understanding and appreciation of this intriguing period in history!
