One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 16th January 2026

Another wonderful week in Year 6

We’ve had a fantastic start to the new term, with Year 6 diving into some rich and challenging learning across the curriculum.

English

This week, the children continued exploring our core text, The Highwayman. We focused particularly on the beautifully illustrated scenes within the book, discussing what can be inferred from the imagery and how it enhances our understanding of the story.

The children have produced two key pieces of writing:

  • A character description of Tim the Ostler – looking beyond his unusual appearance to explore his personality and motivations.
  • An internal monologue from Bess – capturing her emotional conflict as she chooses between saving her true love or protecting herself.

Their empathy, creativity, and use of language have been wonderful to see.

Maths

Our maths learning focused on finding parts of amounts, including both fractions and percentages. The children used their prior number knowledge brilliantly to break down problems and apply these skills to real‑life contexts. These are essential skills that will support them not only in school but beyond.

Thematic Learning – How to Mind Your Heart

We launched our new thematic topic this week. The children began by exploring the role of blood within the human body and discovering what it is made of. To bring their learning to life, they even had the chance to create their own model version of blood—a hands‑on activity they really enjoyed!

Next week, the children will build on this by learning about the heart. They will also watch a live dissection of a pig and ox heart carried out by some of their teachers—a brilliant opportunity to deepen their scientific understanding.
