One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 23rd January 2026

Another wonderful week in Year 6!

English

This week marked the final lessons on our class text The Highwayman before we begin our exciting new novel, Skellig. The children completed a persuasive writing task, creating a formal letter to a mock jury explaining why the Highwayman should not receive a death sentence for the crime he committed.

They demonstrated an excellent grasp of persuasive techniques and formal language, presenting well‑structured arguments supported by evidence from the text. Their writing showed maturity, confidence and thoughtful reasoning.

Maths

In maths, the children have been applying their understanding of percentages of amounts to a range of problem‑solving activities. They have also begun a new unit on Decimals and Measures.

So far, pupils have focused on reading and interpreting a variety of scales in real‑life contexts, helping to develop both their accuracy and problem‑solving skills. 6Y also revisited their previous learning from earlier in the year by playing a range of fun maths games.

Thematic Learning

The children have had an amazing week in their thematic learning, focusing on the human circulatory system. They created informative T‑shirts to demonstrate their knowledge and deepen their understanding of how the system works.

They also explored the anatomy of the heart in greater detail. Mrs Watling and Mrs Pellett very kindly performed dissections of a pig heart and an ox heart, allowing the children to see first‑hand how the heart functions. This was a fantastic learning opportunity that greatly enhanced their scientific understanding.

Homework

Please continue to support your child with the following expectations:

  • 📖 Reading: Please read with your child at least three times per week.
All children have been given a ZPD to help them choose books suitable for their reading level. Once a book is completed, children must complete a quiz before selecting a new book. Quizzes can be completed at school or at home using Accelerated Reader. Log‑in details can be found in reading records.
