Year 6 Weekly News – 30th January 2026

We have had another wonderful—if very busy—week in Year 6! The children have shown great focus, curiosity, and enthusiasm across all areas of their learning.
English
This week, our English lessons have been inspired by Skellig. The children have been making predictions about the text, exploring the opening chapters, and developing their descriptive writing skills. After meeting several key characters who will shape the narrative, the children began crafting detailed setting descriptions based on the book’s locations. They have now started their characterisation of Skellig himself, which they will complete on Monday.
Maths
In maths, the children have been working hard to solve problems involving the area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. They also applied their understanding of mass and money to a variety of real‑life problem‑solving tasks. Their resilience, reasoning, and strategic thinking have made all their teachers extremely proud.
Thematic Learning
Our thematic learning has continued to be as engaging as ever. Building on last week’s heart dissection, the children carried out a series of experiments to deepen their understanding of how nutrients are transported and absorbed within the human body. Their scientific enquiry skills continue to flourish.
Homework Reminders
Thank you for supporting your child with the following expectations:
📖 Reading
Please read with your child at least three times per week.
All children have a ZPD to help them select books matched to their reading level. After completing each book, they should take an Accelerated Reader quiz before choosing their next one. Quizzes can be done at home or at school using the link below.
