This week, our English curriculum has introduced the text ‘Street Child,’ which narrates the poignant story of Jim, a child navigating the adversities of Victorian society. Through Jim’s experiences, students gain insight into the harsh realities faced by children during this era. The narrative culminates in Jim recounting his struggles to a gentleman who would later become Dr Barnardo, a pivotal figure in the history of child welfare.

In an engaging classroom activity, students assumed the role of Jim and composed letters that conveyed his emotions and experiences. This exercise emphasised the use of emotive language, allowing students to explore the depth of Jim’s character and the societal context in which he lived.

Looking ahead to next week, our focus will shift to life within the workhouse. Students will engage in writing a setting description, further enhancing their understanding of the historical backdrop and its impact on individuals like Jim.

 

Maths

In mathematics, the children have been diligently focusing on the conversion of units of measure. This comprehensive exploration has encompassed the conversion of time, length, and mass through a variety of methodologies. The students have engaged in practical exercises that not only reinforce their understanding but also enhance their ability to apply these concepts in real-world scenarios.

Looking ahead to next week, we shall commence a new unit centred on decimals. This unit will emphasise the essential skills of multiplying, adding, and subtracting decimals from whole numbers. Through a series of structured activities and guided practice, the children will develop a robust understanding of decimal operations, which are fundamental to their mathematical education.

Thematic

 This week, we have commenced our thematic topic, ‘Tides of Change,’ which will span across two terms. The focus of this unit is to explore the rich history of Broadstairs and Ramsgate, examining how these coastal towns have evolved over time.

During this initial week, the children have engaged in learning about the historical significance of Ramsgate harbour. This vital port has played a crucial role in the development of the area, serving various functions throughout its history, from a fishing hub to a key player in maritime trade.

Looking ahead to next week, our studies will shift to the pivotal event known as Operation Dynamo. This operation, which took place during World War II, will provide the students with insights into the strategic importance of Ramsgate and its harbour during times of conflict.

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- All children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with time-tables knowledge.

- Mathletics homework has also been set for the children to complete by next Friday.

- Please see the homework menu attached for our thematic homework. This can be completed in the homework book provided if you wish.

- Please choose ten spellings each week to practice with your child at home. They can use the format shown in the book.
