A fantastic week in Year 3!
Thematic
This week in Thematic, the children have been learning all about the Maya civilisation, focusing particularly on Maya beliefs, their number system and their writing system. The children were fascinated to learn about the importance of religion and gods within Maya culture and enjoyed exploring how beliefs shaped daily life for the Maya people.
As part of our learning about the Maya number system, the children used objects to represent numbers in the same way the Maya would have done many years ago. They showed great enthusiasm and problem-solving skills as they explored how symbols and objects could be used to create different values.
The children also enjoyed learning about the Maya writing system and had the opportunity to design and create their own hieroglyphs. It was wonderful to see their creativity and imagination shine through as they carefully thought about the meaning behind their symbols.
Next week, the children will be continuing their learning about the Maya civilisation and exploring further aspects of Maya life and culture.
Maths
In Maths this week, the children have been learning about angles and exploring the different types of angles, including right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. They enjoyed identifying angles in shapes and around the classroom, using their mathematical vocabulary confidently during discussions and activities.
Throughout the week, the children have developed their understanding of how angles can be recognised and compared, and they have shown great enthusiasm when applying this knowledge to practical tasks.
Next week, the children will continue their learning of 2D and 3D shapes, exploring their properties and identifying similarities and differences between different shapes.
English
In English this week, the children have been learning all about persuasive writing in preparation for creating their own persuasive posters. The children have explored a range of persuasive language, features and techniques, identifying how writers and advertisers encourage people to buy products or agree with an idea. They’ve looked closely at different adverts and discussed the ways in which colour, slogans, exciting vocabulary and rhetorical questions are used to persuade an audience.
As part of their learning, the children have designed their own chocolate bars, thinking carefully about the target audience, packaging and the features that would make their product appealing to customers. The children have planned their own adverts, using persuasive techniques to make their writing engaging and convincing.
Next week, we are looking forward to seeing the children write their persuasive posters.
Art competition
This term's art competition is inspired by the incredible artist Bridget Riley, who is famous for creating amazing Op Art. Her artwork uses lines, shapes, patterns and colour to trick the eye and create movement, illusion and energy.
Your Brief:
Create your own piece of Op Art using any media you like!
You could use:
-
Paint
-
Pencil
-
Felt tips
-
Collage
-
Digital art
-
Mixed media
-
Or anything else creative!
Think carefully about:
-
Pattern
-
Repetition
-
Shape
-
Line
-
Contrast
-
Optical illusions
Make your artwork bold, eye-catching and full of movement — just like Bridget Riley’s work! I would advise looking up YouTube tutorials to help you as this is a very tricky style of art to create.
The competition closes by the next Art Assembly. Please write your name and class clearly on the back of your artwork. All entries must be handed to Mr Mason
