Term 5 Week 4
English
This week in English, we have been busy writing diary entries from the perspective of different characters in Street Child. The children did a wonderful job stepping into the shoes of the characters and thinking carefully about how they might feel. We focused on using emotive language to make our writing more powerful and engaging.
Next week, the children will be creating a non-chronological report about the Victorians. Using the knowledge they have learnt about Victorian life in Street Child, they will create an information text for other children. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to share what they have discovered in a clear, interesting and informative way.
Maths
This week in maths, the children have been working really well on adding and subtracting decimals and whole numbers. They have shown great focus and confidence as they practised their skills and built a stronger understanding of place value. It has been lovely to see them using what they have learnt to solve a range of problems, explaining their thinking and checking their answers carefully.
Next week, the children will move on to learning how to multiply decimals. This will help them develop their mathematical fluency and tackle more challenging calculations with confidence. They will also be completing their termly arithmetic test, which will give them the opportunity to show all the progress they have made so far.
Thematic
This week in thematic, the children took part in a fantastic range of science experiments. They explored friction, water resistance, air resistance, buoyancy and gravity, building their understanding through hands-on investigation and lively discussion. It was brilliant that the rain held off, as we were able to carry out many of the experiments outside, which made the learning even more exciting and memorable.
The children showed real curiosity and enthusiasm as they tested, observed and compared their results. They worked brilliantly together, sharing ideas and thinking carefully about what they noticed.
Next week, the children will become geographers and create a field report to show how the coastline in Broadstairs has changed throughout history. This will give them a wonderful opportunity to combine research, observation and historical understanding in a meaningful way.
