One Childhood - One Chance

Year 5 Weekly News 26.6.26

Term 6 Week 4

English

This week in English, the children have worked exceptionally hard to complete their suspense narratives. They have shown real determination in refining their writing, carefully selecting ambitious vocabulary and using a range of sentence lengths to build tension and suspense effectively. Their attention to detail has helped to create atmosphere and maintain the reader’s interest throughout each story.

As the week progressed, the children took great pride in presenting their work in a more creative format. For the final part of the week, they designed and made their own book for their story, complete with a thoughtfully created front cover. This task allowed them to combine their writing with illustration and presentation, resulting in a polished and engaging final piece.

Maths

In maths this week, the children have been developing their understanding of division with remainders and applying this knowledge in practical contexts. They have worked diligently to interpret division problems accurately, using their reasoning skills to explain why a remainder may be necessary in certain situations. This has enabled them to deepen their mathematical fluency and confidence.

The children have also been solving a range of money problems, demonstrating increasing accuracy when calculating totals, change and comparisons between amounts. Today, they enjoyed an especially engaging lesson in which they created their own shops. This activity provided a valuable opportunity to use coins and notes in realistic scenarios, reinforcing their learning through purposeful, hands-on experience. Their enthusiasm and mathematical thinking were evident throughout the lesson.

Thematic

This week, our thematic learning has encouraged the children to consider the importance of environmental responsibility and civic participation. In a particularly purposeful activity, the children wrote a letter to the local government to encourage them to use more renewable energy sources. Their writing demonstrated impressive maturity, persuasive language, and a clear understanding of how communities can act to protect the planet. The children reflected thoughtfully on the benefits of solar, wind, and other sustainable forms of energy. This task not only strengthened their literacy skills, but also fostered a strong sense of citizenship and shared responsibility for the future.

Ducklings

Over the past ten days, Year 5 has been delighted to care for a group of ducklings. We have watched them hatch, grow and thrive, observing their progress with fascination and pride. Some of us were even fortunate enough to give them a splash, which was an unforgettable experience. The ducklings have now departed for their new home at a small, local farm, where they will continue to flourish. Their time with us has been both educational and memorable, and it has deepened our appreciation of the care and responsibility involved in nurturing young animals.

Homework

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- All children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.

Welcome (renaissance-go.com)

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with time-tables knowledge.
