One Childhood - One Chance

26.06.26 Year 3 Weekly News

What a week!

Thematic

This week in our thematic learning, the children have been exploring the fascinating layers of the rainforest. They have learnt about the different animals that inhabit each layer, the unique climate of the rainforest, and the rich variety of vegetation that thrives within this incredible ecosystem.

To showcase their learning, the children created detailed cross-sectional information pages, demonstrating their understanding of the rainforest's structure and the features found within each layer. They worked hard to present their knowledge clearly, combining factual information with labelled diagrams.

Next week, we will build on this learning by exploring deforestation and the global issues affecting our rainforests. The children will consider the impact of human activity on these vital habitats and discuss why protecting rainforests is so important for wildlife, people, and our planet.

English

This week in English, the children have been exploring how spiders build their intricate webs in preparation for writing an explanation text. They began by gathering research about the fascinating process, learning about the different types of silk spiders produce and the purpose of each stage in web construction.

To deepen their understanding, the children explored the sequence of steps involved in creating a web and watched videos to help them visualise the process. This allowed them to identify the key features of explanation texts, including chronological order, technical vocabulary, and clear, precise language.

Next week, the children will use their research and knowledge to write their own explanation texts, clearly explaining how a spider spins its web.

Maths

This week in Maths, the children have been applying their understanding of measure to solve a range of word problems. They have used formal written methods for addition and subtraction to calculate accurately, while developing their reasoning skills by interpreting and solving real-life measurement problems.

The children also used bar models to represent the information within each problem. This helped them to identify the known and unknown values, making it easier to choose the correct calculation and explain their mathematical thinking.

Next week, we will begin a new unit on Multiplication and Division. The children will develop their calculation strategies and apply their understanding to solve a variety of reasoning and problem-solving challenges.

Sports Day

Well done to all of our Year 3 and Year 4 children for a fantastic Sports Day! It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, determination and effort on display throughout the morning. The children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and skill in every event, supporting and encouraging one another while giving their very best.

A huge thank you to all of the parents and families who came along to cheer on the children and help create such a positive atmosphere. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps make events like these so special.

Congratulations also to 3Y and 4R for being crowned our Year 3 and Year 4 Sports Day champions. This is a fantastic achievement and one they should be very proud of.

It was a wonderful celebration of sport, teamwork and community spirit, and a great morning was had by all.
