Welcome back to Upton. We hope you all had a wonderful summer!

Although short, this week at Upton has been action-packed full of fun learning and play. Our excited Year 6s have spent the last two days inside and outside the class looking at their own Personal Development as part of our whole school PD for Term 1.  We have discussed how to regulate our own emotions, what is an appropriate way to communicate, what good communication is and how to look after our own wellbeing.  

We made links to online safety and how to keep ourselves safe online, how to talk and to listen when online, how to behave appropriately online, group chats, our digital footprint and sensible phone usage.  

We have also spent time reminding the children of the ‘Upton Way’ and what that means for them and our school.  We spent time talking about our school rules and why they are important for us all: Be Ready, Be Safe and Be Respectful.  These are also linked to our British Values, which we have discussed this week.

Important Messages and Dates:

Quex Park Trip

We have a Year 6 trip to Quex Park coming up that is linked to our first Year 6 Thematic Topic – Darwin’s Delights.  This trip is on: Wednesday 14^th and Thursday 15^th October.  Please check your MCAS App for any forms that will need completing regarding permissions and how to pay.  A letter has also been sent out giving details about the school trip and what day your child’s class will be visiting on.

Kent Test

Next Thursday (10^th September) our Year 6 children (who have opted to take this test) will sit the Kent Test.  Testing will happen all day with a number of short tests and breaks.  The children will be split into 6 rooms and every child will know where they will sit their test on Wednesday 9^th September as part of their familiarisation session.  As a school, children's wellbeing is incredibly important.  Please email / contact your child’s teacher if you have any worries or concerns about this day.  All Year 6 teachers will be in class on that day alongside additional SLT. 

Outside play

At Upton, play is incredibly important and we want our children to be able to experience every part of our outdoor provision.  Please can we ask that children come to school with named wellies that they can leave at school, alongside a waterproof jacket.  Our children are outside in all weathers every day.

Usernames and passwords

The children will come home over the next two weeks with a reading record, a new Accelerated Reader level and password and TTRS passwords.  

Home Learning

At Upton, our expectation for home learning is to read 3 times a week at home.  We would like the children to bring their signed reading records into school daily so that these can be signed by their class teacher.  Reading is incredibly important, especially as we get the children ready for the next stage of their education.  We also ask that the children practise times tables regularly at home.
