Maths

This week we have been looking at the place value of 6-digit numbers. Pupils have developed their understanding of the value represented by each digit and have used this knowledge to read, interpret and work with larger numbers accurately.

We have rounded, ordered and compared 6-digit numbers, applying appropriate mathematical vocabulary and strategies. Ordering numbers has required pupils to identify which digits are most significant when determining the size of a number. When comparing numbers, they have used the relevant comparison language and symbols to explain their reasoning.

We also applied our rounding knowledge to rounding problems. This has supported pupils in recognising when rounding is useful and in selecting an appropriate level of accuracy for a given problem. Pupils have been encouraged to explain their methods clearly and to check whether their answers are reasonable.

Next week, we are looking at Roman Numerals and beginning our addition and subtraction unit. This will provide opportunities to explore the structure and conventions of the Roman numeral system before developing written and mental methods for addition and subtraction. We will continue to focus on accurate calculation, mathematical language and explaining the reasoning behind each answer.

English

This week in English, we wrote a setting description to describe the sea during a storm in Kensuke’s Kingdom. The children began the week by creating a piece of artwork to use as a stimulus for writing. This visual approach supported them in developing a clear picture of the setting and identifying details that could be incorporated into their descriptions.

The artwork was then used to gather descriptive vocabulary. The children focused on selecting and applying adjectives and adverbs to communicate the appearance, movement and atmosphere of the stormy sea. They considered how precise word choices can help a reader to imagine a setting and understand the conditions experienced by the characters.

Next week, the children will write a diary entry from the perspective of Michael as he first meets Kensuke. They will begin with a draw from reading task, which will support their understanding of the scene and encourage them to identify relevant details from the text. The writing focus will be expanded noun phrases. The children will develop their ability to add precise detail to nouns, helping them to describe people, places and objects effectively within a first-person diary entry.

Thematic

This week, the children developed their geographical knowledge by mapping out the countries and rivers in the UK and North America. This activity supported their understanding of location, spatial relationships and the physical features that shape different regions.

As part of their work on North America, the children also added deserts to their maps. They considered where these environments are located and how geographical features can vary across a continent. Using maps helped the children to develop their skills in identifying, locating and representing information accurately.

Alongside their map work, the children learnt about the Native American people and how they lived in different areas of North America. They explored how location and the surrounding environment influenced aspects of daily life, including access to natural resources and the ways in which communities adapted to their surroundings. This provided an opportunity to connect geographical learning with historical and cultural understanding.

Next week, we are looking at mountain ranges across the UK and North America. The children will locate and compare mountain ranges, considering their position, scale and physical characteristics. They will continue to use maps to interpret geographical information and will build on their understanding of how landscapes differ between regions.

• Friday is swimming for 4B and 4G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why. Children MUST have a swim cap and earrings removed.

• Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.

• Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.

• Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.

OPAL

At Upton, play is incredibly important and we want our children to be able to experience every part of our outdoor provision.  Please can we ask that children come to school with named wellies that they can leave at school, alongside a waterproof jacket.  Our children are outside in all weathers every day.

Home Learning

At Upton, our expectation for home learning is to read 3 times a week at home.  We would like the children to bring their signed reading records into school daily so that these can be signed by their class teacher.  Reading is incredibly important, especially as we get the children ready for the next stage of their education.  We also ask that the children practise times tables regularly at home.
