One Childhood - One Chance

Upton’s Fascinating Greek History Adventure

The impact that the ancient Greek civilisation has on modern life has been investigated by children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

Year 5 pupils studied the way that innovations and ideas from 12th century BC and onwards shaped and developed society through the millennia.

They learnt about life in Athens and Sparta which led to a constructive debate with children using their oracy talking and listening skills to make their views known and to take other viewpoints on board.

Greek mythology and literature engaged pupils and they studied Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey that tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War.

During Design Technology lessons the group created camshaft mechanism miniature Greek-style theatres.

The climax of their studies was a ‘wow day’ where pupils tasted Greek food, took part in Olympic-inspired events, enjoyed traditional dancing, acted out myths and legends, and designed period-style pottery.

Head of Year 5 Billie Danson said: “Our children were deeply immersed in this topic. They learnt so much about the Ancient Greek influence on modern life. “

Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Once again the success of this topic work demonstrates how thematic curriculum learning crosses into so many subject areas. It offers pupils a rich palette of experiences and gives them a broad overview of the work they are engaged with.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
