Upton Junior School’s love of literacy added a fresh chapter with this year’s World Book Day celebration.
The theme was 'vocabulary' - children and staff chose a word and then dressed up as a representation of that word.
Organisers Stevie Bunce and Emily Watkins are joint English leads at Upton. They said: “We were blown away by the creativity and effort that went into the costumes.
“As this year is the National Year of Reading, World Book Day provided us with a fantastic opportunity to further promote a love of reading.”
The children started the day with an assembly where they enjoyed 'The Masked Reader' where they had to guess the disguised staff who filmed themselves reading an extract from a text. It was a fantastic fun start to a busy day of activities.
These included paired reading for pleasure, sharing their favourite book with their class, completing a piece of writing linked to their chosen word, and a vocabulary parade to show off their word and costume.
Pupils also set themselves a reading goal for the rest of the year and will be working hard for the rest of this academic year to achieve their goal.
Head of School Darci Arthur described it as ‘a wonderful day full of the love of reading’.
She added: “We celebrated books and the pleasure we derive from them. It was delightful seeing all the children dressed up and engrossed in the various literacy-based activities such as young children and older pupils pairing up for buddy story sessions.
“Reading and the love of reading is at the heart of Upton's curriculum and it was another special opportunity to be immersed in a wonderful past time."
