Community Success With Upton’s Music Team

The sound of music has been echoing far beyond the halls of Upton Juniors in Broadstairs as the school’s talented young musicians have taken to the community to raise thousands of pounds for local and national causes.
From festive carols to high-octane rock performances, Upton’s music team has maintained a relentless schedule of appearances, proving that pupil voices can have a powerful impact on fundraising efforts.
In a standout collaboration, the joint choir had the privilege of sending 70 singers to Holy Trinity Church in Broadstairs to perform alongside the Thanet Male Voice Choir in a fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK, contributing to an impressive total of £5,000 raised for the charity.
The senior choir also performed at the town’s Royal Albion Hotel and North Foreland Golf Club; demonstrating the school’s commitment to all members of the community, a smaller vocal group also visited a local care home to perform for residents.
Meanwhile Upton’s thriving band scene has also been instrumental in the school's charitable outreach. The children’s band called People of the People took to the stage at a fundraiser hosted by Thanet Drum Tuition.
Delivering confident covers of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ and Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’, the young rockers helped the event secure £674 for Mika’s Mutts, a local dog rescue charity.
The momentum continues with the senior choir and the band Riots of Colour performing in Margate as part of the 1st Garlinge Scouts’ ‘ScoutJam’, a dedicated charity night aimed at raising funds for the World Scout Jamboree. Their energetic performances helped raise just over £700, supporting fellow young people in their pursuit of international adventure.
Music teacher Graham Smith said: “These performances do more than just raise money; they provide pupils with invaluable stage experience.
“They love being able to perform for the local community and it is even better that we can show them that we can always give something back.
“Music has always been good at bringing communities together and the fact we can help raise money for charities with our music is fantastic.”
Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Working together with a range of worthy causes and exciting events are proud moments for us – it is heartwarming for our children to see how the music they create contributes so positively.
“We are firm believers of supporting community initiatives – to be part of such special occasions is an experience our choir members and musicians will remember with pride.”
Upton Juniors is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
