One Childhood - One Chance

Super Science Sessions at Upton and Beyond

Exploring the wonderful world of science is an integral part of learning at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

Children of all age groups are encouraged to embrace all aspects of the subject as well as the wider learning umbrella known as STEAM that includes science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

Year 5 pupils recently visited Chatham and Clarendon House in Ramsgate to take part in an invigorating STEAM event that was a valuable opportunity for them to engage with practical learning in a secondary school setting, broadening their understanding.

They enjoyed a range of hands-on activities designed to develop creativity, problem-solving and teamwork. They made rock cakes, printed tote bags and welded keyrings, gaining first-hand experience of different processes and materials.

They also completed a maths challenge, which encouraged them to apply their numeracy skills in a real-world context. One of the most memorable activities was digging for gold, which captured the children’s enthusiasm and curiosity.

Head of Year 5 Billie Danson said: “This was a valuable experience for our children and gave them the opportunity to try new lessons in a secondary setting. It also helped to build confidence, strengthen communication skills and inspire interest in future learning.

“Staff praised their excellent behaviour, positive attitudes and willingness to participate fully in every task.”

The same year group also took part in a series of exciting experiments during Science Week at Upton, exploring key scientific concepts through practical investigation and discussion.

The activities were designed to deepen their understanding of forces and their effects on objects in motion and at rest.

The children learned about air resistance, water resistance and friction, identifying how these forces act between moving surfaces and affect the movement of objects. They also explored gravity, finding out that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object.

In another investigation, pupils examined up-thrust and experimented with ways to sink a bottle, developing their understanding of how objects behave in water. They also investigated the weight of air by comparing inflated and deflated balloons, leading to thoughtful observations about the properties of air.

Mrs Danson added: “Throughout the week, the children worked collaboratively, recorded their findings and used scientific vocabulary accurately to explain what they had discovered.

“Great fun was had by all, and the experience provided a valuable learning opportunity that supported curiosity, enquiry and scientific thinking.”

Head of School Darci Arthur added: “Our aim is to give children diverse opportunities whether on site or in other educational settings. The recent STEAM work at Chatham and Clarendon Grammar and Science Week in class is a perfect example of how we broaden their outlook through focussed and exciting learning.”

Upton Juniors is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
