One Childhood - One Chance

Upton’s Historic Kent Cricket Triumph

A super summer of cricketing success has firmly cemented the sporting pedigree at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

Within the space a week, the school has been crowned Kent Dynamos Cricket Champions in both the Mixed Year 5/6 and Girls' competitions, making school history.

The mixed team qualified for the Kent finals after winning the Thanet Mixed Year 5/6 Dynamos competition. They then travelled to the county finals in Ashford to represent their home district - and produced outstanding performances throughout the day, winning every match to be crowned Kent champions.

Just one week earlier, the girls' team had also completed an unbeaten run from the Thanet competition through to the Kent Dynamos Finals at Sidcup.

The girls' victory was especially significant as it marked the first time in more than 12 years that a Thanet state school has won the competition.

Their batting, bowling and fielding were exceptional throughout the tournament, helping them win every game and secure the county title.

PE lead and teacher Callum Noble said : “These two successes mean that this is the first time in Upton history we have been crowned both the Kent Girls' and Kent Mixed Dynamos Championships in the same year.

“Becoming county champions once was an incredible feeling for our players and support team, but to do it twice in one week is unbelievable.

“Everyone gave their best, supported each other and worked together as a team. I'm so proud of what we've achieved, and it's something the children will remember the rest of their lives.”

Head of School Darci Arthur agreed and added: “Huge congratulations – we are all proud of this magnificent achievement that highlights all that is best about our school’s determination, ambition and enthusiasm in the face of extremely tough and worthy opponents throughout both competitions.

“Every player played their part, supporting one another and representing the school with pride, resilience, and excellent sportsmanship.”

*At the start of this school year Mr Noble was officially presented with a top cricketing honour. At a special ceremony at the home of Kent cricket at the Spitfire ground in Canterbury in September he was presented with his award as the Kent’s best young coach.

Upton Juniors is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
