An epic Science learning adventure is under way at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

Launched this term, the Science Quest will see each year group explore its own set of six scientists, with one being explored each term throughout the year.

The initiative across all year groups means that, over the course of their time at Upton, every child will be introduced to all 24 scientists.

The scientists have been carefully selected to complement the topics and areas of learning covered by each year group.

Upton’s Science lead Rebekah Crowe-White explained how the idea developed following children’s interest in finding out more about the people behind the science.

She said: “The initiative is designed to encourage curiosity about science beyond the classroom (it was in fact an idea posed by our ‘pupil voice’ session at the end of last academic year.)

“A poster featuring the scientists is displayed in each classroom, and children are encouraged to explore the scientists and their work at home with their families too.

“I have also deliberately included some lesser-known scientists, alongside more familiar names, both male and female, historical and current, so that the children are introduced to a broad and diverse range of inspiring people and their work.

“The children are already engaging really positively with the initiative. For example, Year 6 are focusing on Charles Darwin this week, linked to their current learning.

“I hope the journey will help the children to see science as something exciting, accessible and relevant, while introducing them to a wide range of people who have made fascinating contributions to our understanding of the world.”

Head Teacher Darci Arthur praised the idea. She said: “Science is an important and integral part of learning at Upton. Learning about the people who made astounding discoveries and who influenced so much of society through the ages is an interesting and informative way of delving deeper in to the subject.

“A journey from day one until they leave Upton will give our pupils a strong foundation and deep understanding of why Science is so important in all our lives.”

 Scientists under the microscope this term are:

*William Gilbert who lived over 400 years ago and who is particularly famous for his investigations into magnetism and electricity.

*William Beaumont who was an American surgeon and scientist who made important discoveries about how our digestive system works.

*Maria Sibylla Merian was a pioneering naturalist, scientist and scientific illustrator.  She was fascinated by insects and spent much of her life carefully observing and recording them.

*Charles Darwin, best known for developing the theory of evolution by natural selection. His work had a huge impact on the scientific understanding of life on Earth.
