Upton’s Young Scientists Feel the Force and See The Light

An exciting challenge day featuring Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) tasks tested a range of skills for children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
It was the perfect opportunity for the Year 3 group to apply the variety of knowledge they have so far developed this term - from science experiments to hands-on engineering.
The classroom was buzzing with excitement, creativity, and teamwork as pupils enthusiastically got down to business.
The event began with a challenge to design and build periscopes. It encouraged children to demonstrate their understanding of light and reflection, using mirrors to direct light in their creations.
With cardboard tubes, mirrors, and plenty of perseverance, they crafted working periscopes that allowed them to see around corners and over obstacles.
It was fantastic to see their problem-solving skills in action as they adjusted angles and tweaked their designs to get a clear view.
The next problem to be solved was designing and creating a magnetic maze game where they guided small metal objects through intricate pathways.
This challenge sparked lots of discussion about magnetic forces and how to balance difficulty with fun. They also made cars, powered by magnets, which they used to guide around a track.
The event formed part of this term’s Year 3 topic work Feel The Force, See The Light.
Head of Year 3 Becky Andrews said: “Our STEM challenge day was a fantastic way for the children to see how science, technology, engineering, and maths come together in real-world projects.
“They collaborated brilliantly, demonstrating resilience and enthusiasm in every activity. We are so proud of their achievements and can’t wait to see how they continue to apply their skills in the future.”
Head Teacher Darci Arthur added: “This group showed a great breadth of knowledge and initiative as they tackled tasks that were fun and demanding.
“Special focus days weave together different aspects of learning and underpin the various skills they have learned so far. The STEM day was an excellent experience for our children and the Year 3 team.”
Upton Juniors is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
