10.10.25 Year 3 Weekly News

It's been another busy week in Year 3!
Thematic
This week in our thematic learning, Year 3 have been travelling back in time to explore life during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The children have been fascinated to discover how people lived thousands of years ago and how life changed between these two important periods in history. We began by learning about the Bronze Age, when people first discovered how to make tools and weapons from bronze. The children were amazed at how this new material helped people to farm more efficiently and create beautiful jewellery and ornaments.
Next, we moved on to the Iron Age, where children found it interesting that this change allowed people to build better tools and stronger weapons, leading to the growth of larger communities and hillforts. As part of our learning, the class compared the similarities and differences between the two ages. They discussed how both periods relied heavily on farming, metalwork, and community life, but that the Iron Age saw improvements in technology, trade, and defence.
It’s been an exciting week of discovery- Year 3 have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm while exploring how human innovation shaped life long ago. We’re so proud of their thoughtful discussions and creative work!
Next week, we will be moving onto our, RE topic, where we will be studying Judaism.
English
This week in English, Year 3 have been working hard to write a recount from Om’s perspective, imagining what life was like in a time so different from our own. Our focus has been on using first-person pronouns to bring Om’s thoughts and feelings to life, helping readers see the world through her eyes. The children have also been practising how to include expanded noun phrases to add detail and description, making their writing more vivid and engaging. We have been encouraging everyone to use ambitious vocabulary. Year 3 have shown great creativity and imagination in their writing.
Next week, we will be writing a non-chronological report about life during the Stone Age.
Maths
This week in Maths, Year 3 have been deepening their understanding of place value by exploring three-digit numbers. The children have been using a range of representations, including place value charts, base ten equipment, and part, part whole models to help them visualise and understand the value of each digit in a number. We’ve been practising how to partition numbers in different ways, which has helped the children see that there’s more than one way to break down and build up a number. Year 3 have also been learning how to compare and sequence numbers, using mathematical vocabulary such as greater than, less than, and equal to. Through hands-on activities and partner challenges, the children have developed their confidence in identifying and ordering numbers up to 1,000.
It’s been fantastic to see how engaged and enthusiastic Year 3 have been during our maths lessons this week. Their growing understanding of place value is helping to build strong foundations for all their future number work!
Next week, we will be delving deeper into Place Value, by exploring rounding.
Home Learning
Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu, which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Children have been given a Home Learning book to complete their home learning tasks in.
Home Learning is due in on Friday 17th October 2025
Spellings
Children will have a spelling sheet attached in their home learning book. Each week, they will need to practise the core spellings listed using the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ strategy. Within your child’s home learning book, there are prompts and tips to support children in learning their spellings, along with a spelling list and an example of a table, which children can draw themselves, each time they learn a new set of spellings. Children should choose five spellings to practise at home each week. Please do speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
