16.01.26 Year 3 Weekly News

Another busy week in Year 3!
Thematic
This week in Thematic learning, the children have begun their exciting new topic, “How My Body Works.” We launched the unit by exploring a Big Question: How do different parts of our body work? This discussion gave the children the opportunity to share their existing knowledge and ideas about the human body, and it was wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm from the very start.
Building on this initial exploration, our learning this week has focused on the human skeleton. The children have been learning about both the structure and function of the skeleton and why it is such an important part of the human body. Through practical, hands-on activities, they explored how the skeleton supports the body, protects vital organs, and enables movement. These experiences helped the children develop a deeper understanding of how our bodies work together to help us move and stay safe.
The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great engagement as they investigated how bones work and why they are essential for everyday activities.
Next week, the learning will continue with an exciting investigation. The children will be testing a statement and learning more about muscles, exploring how they work alongside the skeleton to help us move. We are looking forward to another week of curious thinking and scientific discovery!

Maths
This week in Maths, the children began an exciting new unit on Multiplication and Division. The focus has been on helping the children develop a strong understanding of these concepts through visual representations.
The children have been learning how to represent multiplication and division expressions using arrays and bar models. These models have supported them in visualising equal groups and understanding what the calculations represent, rather than just focusing on the numbers. The children have also been using bar models to solve a range of problems, explaining their thinking and reasoning as they worked.
Next week, the children will continue to build on this learning by exploring the connection between multiplication and division, helping them to see how these operations are related and how one can be used to check the other. We’re looking forward to seeing the children continue to grow in confidence as they develop their mathematical understanding.

English
This week in English, the children have been focusing on writing setting descriptions. The key aim has been to use descriptive vocabulary to help create a clear sense of mood and atmosphere for the reader.
The children have worked hard to choose ambitious words and phrases, thinking carefully about how their descriptions can bring a setting to life. They have produced some fantastic pieces of writing, showing real creativity and an improving ability to engage the reader through language.
Next week, the children will build on these skills by writing a short monologue in role as a character. This will give them the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings, while continuing to develop their descriptive and expressive writing skills. We’re really looking forward to seeing their ideas take shape.
