One Childhood - One Chance

30.01.26 Year 3 Weekly News

A fab week in Year 3!

Thematic

This week in Thematic, we have continued our exciting learning journey exploring the human body and skeletons. The children have been developing their understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates, using a range of scientific enquiry skills such as sorting, classifying, and comparing different animals.

We have also been exploring joints and muscles, learning about their important role in helping our bodies move. Building on our prior learning about mechanisms from last term, the children made thoughtful connections to support their understanding of the different types of joints and how they move in various ways. It was fantastic to see children using previously learnt knowledge to deepen their scientific thinking.

Looking ahead to next week, we will be learning about nutrition in Science, exploring what our bodies need to stay healthy. This learning will then link into our Design Technology learning, where the children will begin planning and making a healthy snack. Please see the attached letter that was sent home to parents earlier this week, which includes further details about our upcoming learning.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been further deepening our understanding of multiplication and division. The children have been learning about fact families and how inverse operations help us to check and solve both multiplication and division calculations. We also explored how we can use our existing knowledge of the 3 and 4 times tables to help us work out calculations in the 6 and 8 times tables, encouraging children to make links between known facts and new learning.

Next week, we will be moving on to learning about different written methods for solving multiplication and division calculations, supporting children to choose efficient strategies and explain their thinking clearly.

English

In English this week, we have been busy writing character descriptions in the form of a ‘Wanted’ poster, inspired by our class text, The Secret Lake. The children explored a key character from the story, making thoughtful inferences about their personality and actions. Using evidence from the text, children supported their ideas and used these insights to inform their writing. This helped them to develop richer descriptions and supported them to think carefully about how authors show character through actions, dialogue, and behaviour.

Next week, we will be moving on to writing a narrative, using The Secret Lake as a stimulus to inspire our own imaginative storytelling.

Outdoor play

We are pleased to offer a wide range of activities for children to enjoy, outside, during break and lunchtimes. Outdoor play is an important part of the school day, supporting children’s physical wellbeing, social skills, and enjoyment of learning beyond the classroom.

To ensure all children can fully take part in these activities, it is important that they come prepared for outdoor play. We kindly ask that all children have a pair of wellies in school at all times. Having wellies available allows children to embrace outdoor activities, helping them to stay comfortable, safe, and ready to explore and play.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us make outdoor play enjoyable for everyone!
