One Childhood - One Chance

06.02.26 Year 3 Weekly News

Another fantastic week in Year 3!

Thematic

This week has been our DT Week, with a focus on cooking and nutrition. Linked to their Science learning about healthy diets, the children explored where food comes from and how it helps our bodies to stay healthy.

The children planned, designed, made and evaluated a healthy snack: a delicious salsa dip with crudités. They learnt and practised key food preparation skills, including chopping, cutting and slicing, while also thinking carefully about hygiene and safety in the kitchen. Everyone worked brilliantly and showed great enthusiasm, teamwork and independence throughout the day. Most importantly, the children thoroughly enjoyed tasting their finished creations!

Next week, we will be moving on to our RE learning, where the children will begin learning about Islam. We are looking forward to exploring beliefs, practices and traditions as part of this unit.

English

This week in English, the children have been busy planning a narrative. Using our class text as inspiration, they’ve created initial ideas about a character from the book being transported to an alternative setting. The children carefully planned their writing with a clear beginning, middle and end, helping their stories to flow logically and engage the reader.

A key focus this week was using speech and dialogue effectively. The children practised punctuating speech correctly and thought carefully about how dialogue can reveal a character’s thoughts, feelings and reactions. They worked hard to make conversations sound realistic and to use speech to move the story forward.

We were very impressed with the creativity shown and the way the children developed their ideas into complete, well-structured narratives. Well-done to everyone for their enthusiasm and effort this week!

Next week, children will move onto writing their narratives.

Maths

In Maths this week, the children have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10. They explored how numbers change when multiplied or divided by ten and applied this knowledge to solve a range of problems.

To support their understanding, the children used a variety of visual representations and concrete resources, such as place value charts and counters. These helped them clearly see what happens to digits when numbers become ten times bigger or smaller, strengthening their conceptual understanding. The children showed great focus and confidence as they explained their thinking and applied their skills to different problem-solving activities.

Next week, children will be moving onto learning about formal methods for multiplication and division.

Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 10th February

Tuesday 10th February is Internet Safety Day. This year’s theme is ‘Smart tech, safe choices’ exploring the safe and responsible use of AI. Safer Internet Day is a global event that promotes the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology, particularly for children and young people.

To mark the day, the children will be taking part in a special assembly next week, where they will learn more about staying safe online and making sensible choices when using technology.

We would also like to invite parents to a drop-in session on Tuesday from 8:45am to 9:15am. This will be an opportunity to discuss any questions or seek guidance about internet safety at home, including the use of apps, games and emerging technologies such as AI. Parents are warmly invited to join Mr Rowe and Mrs Hill in the computing room after dropping their children off at their classrooms. We hope to see you there!

Term 3 Art competition

We are excited to announce our next school art competition, and this time we’re taking inspiration from one of the most energetic and expressive artists of all time-Jackson Pollock!

Jackson Pollock was famous for his bold, abstract paintings created by dripping, splashing, and pouring paint rather than carefully brushing it on. His work reminds us that art isn’t always about drawing something recognisable- it’s about movement, emotion, and creativity. There are no strict rules, just freedom to explore!

Your task is to create an original piece of artwork inspired by Jackson Pollock’s style. Think about:

  • Movement and energy

  • Lines, splashes, drips, and layers

  • How colours interact and overlap

  • Expressing feeling through marks rather than pictures

You can use any suitable materials at home or school, as long as your work clearly shows inspiration from Pollock’s approach.

All artwork must be clearly labelled on the back you’re your name and class. Completed pieces should be brought to Mr Mason’s art room and the deadline is the next art assembly.

We can’t wait to see the exciting, energetic, and colourful artwork you create. Let loose, have fun, and remember- there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to make art inspired by Jackson Pollock!
