05.05.26 Year 3 Weekly News

What a week in Year 3!
Welcome back to Term 6!
We hope families have all had a wonderful half term break and have spent quality time, doing the things you enjoy. Can you believe, it’s the final term of the school year!
Personal Development
This week in PSHE, our focus has been Living in the Wider World, with a special emphasis on Living in a Diverse Community. Year 3 children have been exploring what it means to be part of a global community, celebrating our differences, and understanding the shared values that connect us all.
As part of our learning, we also looked at how the environment impacts communities across the world. Children were encouraged to think critically about the effects of climate change and how it influences people's daily lives, homes, and access to resources. Each year group spent a dedicated morning focusing on a specific continent, learning about the ways in which climate change has affected communities. Linking to our Thematic learning, Year 3 explored South America, with a specific focus on The Amazon Rainforest. The children engaged in thoughtful discussions and activities that helped them build empathy, awareness, and a stronger sense of global responsibility.
It has been a powerful and eye-opening week, and we’re incredibly proud of the curiosity and compassion Year 3 have shown throughout. We look forward to building on this learning as we continue to explore the wider world around us.

Maths
This week, Year 3 have been learning all about shape. They have explored the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes, identifying features such as sides, vertices, edges, and faces. The children have enjoyed drawing a variety of 2D shapes and discussing their similarities and differences. They have also had the opportunity to make and construct 3D shapes, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of how these shapes are formed and their real-life applications. The children have shown great enthusiasm and confidence when describing and comparing shapes, using mathematical vocabulary accurately in their discussions.

Next week, we will be moving onto learning about measure, where the children will develop their understanding of length, mass, capacity, and other practical measurement skills.
English
In English, we have been exploring poetry linked to our upcoming class text, Charlotte's Web. The children have enjoyed reading, exploring, and analysing a range of poems, discussing the language and techniques used by different poets. As part of their learning, the children have been preparing to write their own free verse poems about spiders and their webs. They have focused on using expanded noun phrases to create vivid descriptions and similes to help bring their ideas to life. The children have shown great creativity and enthusiasm, generating imaginative vocabulary and developing their understanding of how poets create imagery for their readers.
Next week, we will be moving on to writing a recount from the perspective of the main character, Fern, using events from the story to help us understand her thoughts and feelings.
Reading
This week, children have taken their Star Reader Assessment and from Monday, will be issued with their adjusted ZPD code, which will be stuck into their reading records. With this in mind, please could we ask that all children bring their reading records into school on Monday. Children are reminded to bring their reading records in when they have read- we expect children to read at least, three times a week.
Home Learning
