A big thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to attend our meetings with teachers this week. It was so lovely to have the opportunity to speak with you and share how positively the children have settled into the new school year.

We really enjoyed celebrating the children’s progress and discussing how they are getting on in school.

🧲Thematic 

This week in Thematic, we have been investigating friction and exploring how it affects the movement of objects. We planned and carried out our own investigation, making predictions, testing our ideas and discussing what we discovered. We also explored magnetic and non-magnetic materials. We tested a range of different objects to find out which materials were attracted to magnets and which were not.

To develop our understanding further, we investigated the strength of different magnets. We carried out tests and compared our results to see which magnets were the strongest.

It has been a busy and exciting week of practical learning, with lots of opportunities to investigate, make predictions and learn from our results!

Next week, we will be moving on to explore the science of light. We will investigate different light sources and discover where light comes from.

We will explore both natural and artificial light sources and investigate how light helps us to see the world around us. We are looking forward to carrying out lots of practical activities and experiments as we continue to develop our scientific understanding!

Maths This Week

In Maths, we have been exploring two-digit numbers. We have been comparing and ordering numbers, as well as building and drawing two-digit numbers in different ways. We have been developing our understanding of tens and ones and using practical resources to help us represent numbers.

Next week, we will move on to exploring the place value of three-digit numbers. We will begin to understand hundreds, tens and ones and investigate how three-digit numbers can be represented in different ways.

✏️ English: 

This week in English, we started a new text, The Green Ship by Quentin Blake. We have been exploring the setting, where the two characters discover and explore a mysterious wood within a garden.

We have been developing our vocabulary and learning how to use interesting and descriptive language to bring a setting to life. We have enjoyed discussing what the characters might see, hear and experience as they explore the garden.

        

Next week, we will move on to writing a description of the green ship. We will be learning how to use expanded noun phrases to add detail and description to our writing, helping us to create vivid pictures in the reader's mind.

🏠 Home Learning

📖 Reading: Children should read at least 3 times each week and bring their reading journal into school on these days so that we can celebrate and monitor their reading. 

🔢 TTRS: Regular practice will help children develop their fluency and confidence with times tables. 

• Tasks to be completed online, with new tasks set every week. 

• Children’s logins will be stuck into their Reading journal. 

• Further details will follow next week, so keep your eyes peeled! 

Reminders: 

• Year 3 have PE on Fridays and should come to school dressed in the correct school PE kit. 

• 3B and 3G will swim on Tuesdays this term- children will need to come dressed in their PE kit to school on this day, and bring with them their swimming costumes to change into.  

• Swimming kit reminder: full swimming costume/swim shorts. All children must wear a swimming hat and will be expected to remove jewellery (including stud earings). 

• Monday 12^th October: STEM challenge day. Children are invited to dress up. Please find attached below, a copy of the letter that was sent out in July.

• Monday 28^th September: Forest School for 3R 

Key messages: 

• Please can children ensure they bring a Healthy snack in for breaktimes. 

• Children are provided with a school pencil case and so do not need to bring in pencil cases from home or any other toys/resources. 

• Children will also need to make sure they have a pair of wellies and a raincoat in school, so that they are able to make full use of the outdoor activities at playtimes.
