Another amazing week in Year 3!
📖✨National Poetry Day
On Thursday, the children at Upton celebrated National Poetry Day, taking time to appreciate the joy, creativity and magic of poetry.
In Year 3, we explored the wonderful poem Six Ways to Look at a Leaf, which inspired us to look closely at the natural world around us. The children spent the morning reading and sharing poetry, listening carefully to different ideas and enjoying the rhythm and imagery within the poems.
We then headed outside to collect a variety of leaves. The children carefully examined and identified them before using their leaves to create beautiful pieces of artwork. Their artwork became a wonderful source of inspiration for their own writing. Using their observations and imagination, the children created their very own poems about a leaf. They thought carefully about descriptive language, imagery and the different ways a simple leaf can be seen, felt and imagined.
It was fantastic to see such creativity, enthusiasm and imagination from everyone. The children had lots of fun exploring poetry and discovered that inspiration can be found all around us- even in a single leaf! 🍃✨
🧲Thematic
In Thematic this week, we have continued our exploration of magnets, investigating the strength of different magnets and making predictions about which would be the strongest. The children enjoyed carrying out practical investigations and discussing what they discovered.
We then moved on to our new topic of light. We explored different sources of light and began thinking about an interesting question: What is darkness? The children shared their ideas and investigated how light and darkness are connected.

Next week, we will continue our exploration of light by investigating shadows. We will explore how shadows are made and investigate how different materials can affect the shadows we see.

🔢 Maths
This week in maths, the children have continued to develop their understanding of place value. They have been comparing and ordering three-digit numbers, using their knowledge of hundreds, tens and ones to identify which numbers are greater than, less than or equal to one another. We have also been developing our understanding of rounding, particularly rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. The children have been encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking and use the correct mathematical vocabulary when discussing their answers.
Next week, we will build on our understanding of place value by using it to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100. We will explore how the value of each digit changes when we add or subtract these amounts and apply our knowledge to solve a range of calculations and problems.

✏️ English:
This week in English, the children have been exploring the book The Green Ship. We have been focusing on describing the boat, using our senses and imagination to help us bring our descriptions to life. The children have been introduced to lots of new and exciting vocabulary and have been encouraged to choose words carefully to make their writing more interesting and detailed.
We have also been developing our understanding of expanded noun phrases, using adjectives and descriptive language to add more detail to our sentences. The children have been working hard to include these in their own writing and have been checking that their sentences make sense.
To support our writing, we have been using a checklist to help us remember important features, such as capital letters, finger spaces, punctuation and making sure our sentences are clear and meaningful. This is helping the children to become more independent and confident when checking and improving their work.
Next week, we will be moving on to writing a recount of the key events within the text. We will focus on sequencing events in the correct order and using our vocabulary and sentence-writing skills to retell the story clearly.
