One Childhood - One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News - Friday 05.09.25

Wow, what a super week we have had in Year 4 this week! The children have settled exceptionally well and have shown superb behaviour for learning. They have been focused during lessons and have been polite and respectful towards each other and the adults around the school.

Take a look at what we have been up to…

Key Messages for next week…

Tuesday 9th – The children will be watching a show (in school) all about mental health to support our PSHE learning.

Thursday 11th – Year 4 Meet and Greet for parents at 2:45pm in classrooms.

The environmental area will open next week at lunchtimes. Children will need to bring wellies to wear to access this area. They will also need wellies for their forest school sessions.

  • Monday is PE for all of Year 4. Please send the children in wearing their PE kit.
  • Tuesday is swimming for 4B and 4G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why. Children MUST have a swim cap.
  • Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
  • Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
  • Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.

English:

This week in English, we started our first text of the year – Gregory Cool. This is about a boy who visits his grandparents in Tobago. We wrote a postcard as Gregory, telling Mum and Dad how he was finding his time in Tobago. We also watched a video called ‘Bubbles’ and wrote creatively to retell or continue the story.

Next week we will continue to read Gregory Cool and will produce an information text about Tobago.

Maths:

In maths this week, we completed some assessments. We practised our times tables and answered a range of arithmetic and reasoning & problem-solving questions. The children handled the assessment conditions with great maturity, and they should be very proud of themselves.

We are looking forward to beginning our first unit, Number and Place Value, next week.

Thematic Curriculum:

Our afternoon lessons this week were linked to PSHE. Our focus was on change and how we can regulate our emotions. We read ‘The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds and created our own dot artwork, which linked to the text. We created our own worry dolls during our Thrive session and debated which British Value we thought was the most important. We finished the week with some e-safety around self-image and identity. We discussed the need to stay safe online and how we could achieve this. We created avatars that we could use online to help keep our identity private and keep us safe.

Thrive:

Thrive is now embedded into our school culture at Upton and the children will be completing at least two Thrive sessions a week. Each class will have its own focus and Thrive activities will link to this target.
