  • Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
  • Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
  • Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.
  • Wellies are needed so that the children can access the field during break and lunch times.

Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core

This term in Year 4 we are learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term and we look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.

English:

This week in English, we continued to read ‘I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens' and the volcano has started to wake up. We wrote a setting description of the mountain before and after the eruption, focusing on using figurative language. We acted out a scene from the text and created a storyboard with the images.

Next week we will discover what happened when Mount Pelee erupted (a story by Dr Morales) and will write a newspaper report based on the details.

Maths:

In maths this week, we began our fractions unit by representing fractions in different ways. We then built a fraction wall and used it to find equivalent fractions.

Next week we will find fractions of quantities and will use multiplication and division to find equivalent fractions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we began our new topic: Cracking the Earth’s Core. We looked at why earthquakes occur and how volcanoes are formed.

On Friday, Year 4 took part in a carousel of activities for their Wow Day. They created a painted picture of a volcanic eruption by using cotton buds and made a 3D volcano using sugar paper and tissue paper. We also welcomed Tom from One Day Creative, who used drama to teach the children about the myths around volcanoes and earthquakes from different cultures, and Anna from PrimeVR. During the VR session, the children were transported to different volcanoes around the world and watched real footage of them erupting in 3D. The children had a fabulous day!

Next week we will continue to learn about volcanoes and describe the location of different lines of longitude and latitude.
