We have had a fabulous week in Year 4 this week. Take a look at what we have been up to…

Key Messages for next week…

  • Tuesday is swimming for 4B and 4G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why. Children MUST have a swim cap and earrings removed.
  • Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
  • Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
  • Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.
  • Wellies are needed so that the children can access the field during break and lunch times.

Weekly homework tasks:

Reading daily – please bring in your reading record signed by an adult.

TTRS - at least 3 times a week for 10 minutes.

Mathletics – Friday to Friday

Spelling – Please choose approximately 5 words from the Year 3/4 word list to complete ‘look, say, cover, write, check’. This should be completed in the orange Home Learning book and returned to school to be checked by the class teacher.

Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core

This term in Year 4 we are learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

English:

This week in English, we found out about the eruption of Mount Pelee and what that could mean for Mount St. Helens in our book. We wrote a newspaper report detailing the events of the eruption and used direct and indirect (reported) speech to include quotes.

Next week we will write our own volcano survival story, ensuring the development of the plot and setting.

Maths:

In maths this week, we continued to explore fractions by finding fractions of amounts and looked at how fractions link to division.

Next week we will order and compare fractions and look at mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we continued to look at earthquakes and volcanoes. We learnt about the main lines of longitude and latitude and explored the world map by using atlases and globes. We plotted where a range of volcanoes are and where earthquakes have occurred onto a world map. We also developed our group work skills by working alongside our classmates to research the tectonic activity of a specific location.

Next week we will turn our attention to DT and how earthquake-proof buildings are essential to survival.
