Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core
This term in Year 4 we are learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

The children have worked exceptionally hard on their homework projects this term. Here are some more of the great projects we have received:
English:
This week in English, we have focused on poetry and different poetic devices such as rhyming, onomatopoeia, stanzas, repetition and other types of figurative language. We used the poem ‘Windy Nights’ as a study and wrote our own poems linked to volcanoes using the same structure of repetition and rhyming.
Next week we will create a non-chronological report about volcanoes.
Maths:
In maths this week, we continued with our fractions unit. We added and subtracted fractions that were less than one and also added fractions that totalled greater than one.
On Friday, we celebrated Number Day in support of the NSPCC. The children dressed up in digits or as rock stars in exchange for a donation to the NSPCC. They took part in a carousel of activities including tessellation, origami, sport, fort building using nets and a maths investigation. We had a great morning supporting the NSPCC!
Next week we will conclude our fractions work by subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and will complete our post-unit quiz.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week during our afternoon lessons, we used compass points and grid references to locate places with tectonic activity using atlases. We also looked at the advantages and disadvantages of living near volcanoes and shared our opinions with our classmates. To finish the week, we learnt more about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and how the city of Pompeii was completely covered and preserved for hundreds of years. We answered geological questions comparing the tectonic activity of the UK with Italy.
Next week we will explore the religion of Islam.
