Term 4: Innovation Station

This term in Year 4 we are learning about electricity and exploring the early Islamic civilisation. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. Alternatively, digital homework can be emailed to the class teacher. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

English:

This week in English, we continued to read our class text and learnt how Edward went overboard whilst they were sailing to London. The children wrote a recount of Edward’s time on the ship and how he ended up on the bottom of the ocean. The focus was to include different cohesive devices in our writing, including conjunctions, adverbials and correct use of pronouns.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day and the children came dressed as their chosen word. Across the morning, the children took part in a vocabulary parade, guessed the masked reader during assembly, wrote a poem with their word as the star and they created a reading identity poster. It was a fun morning!

Next week we will write a letter from Edward to Lawrence and Nellie.

Maths:

In maths this week, we concluded our work on time and completed our post-unit quiz. We converted between 12 and 24-hour time and converted between units (hours, minutes, seconds and years, months, weeks, days).

Next week we will begin our decimals unit.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we began our new topic: Innovation Station. We looked at the difference between electrical and non-electrical appliances, created a circuit using a battery, bulb and wires, and investigated whether different materials are good conductors or insulators of electricity.

Next week we will continue to explore electricity and will incorporate a switch into a circuit to create a light-up model.
