Year 5 have settled incredibly well this week and have embraced the week with maturity and determination.
PD Day
With every new term, we begin with PD Day. This gives our children the opportunity to start the term with their class teacher and their peers. It is a day dedicated to learning about PSHE. This term, the children read the story of ‘The Dot,’ which taught them about self-belief and kindness. They created some beautiful Kandinsky inspired artwork to add to the class scrapbooks. Throughout the day, the children also carried out some thrive based activities with the teacher, which will continue throughout the year.
English
This week, the children started the week with a Big Write to showcase their writing skills for their new class teacher. In reading, they focused on their new class text, ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom.’ They predicted what the book might be about, they focused on characters’ thoughts and emotions through drama, and they inferred through questioning. In writing, they started writing a diary entry in role of the new boy at school, from our story. The key skill was to use emotive language. Next week, we will continue reading the text and write a character description based on the main character, Bradley.
Maths
This week, the children started their new place value unit. This is exploring 5-digit numbers, using number lines and comparing. Next week, the children will continue with place value and representing numbers in a variety of ways.
PSHE
The children continued their PSHE learning from PD day by focusing on peer pressure and how to manage positive and negative peer pressure. Today, the children spent some time learning about the British Values and discussing the purpose of them.
Homework
- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
- All children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
