Term 1 Week 2
English
This week, the children continued reading their class text, ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom.’ The focus for writing this week was ambitious vocabulary. The children gathered vocabulary around the outline of Bradley’s head to show the two sides of his personality. They used this to write a character description of Bradley. The children showed a fantastic understanding of Bradley’s character and how he changes depending on the situation. Next week, the children will focus on an event in the text and write about it from differing viewpoints. They will focus on emotive language and showing characterisation through thoughts and feelings.
Maths
This week, the children continued learning about the place value of 5-digit and 6-digit numbers. They ordered and compared them and learnt how to round them to the nearest 100, 1000 and 10,000. Next week, the children will continue to round 6-digit numbers and begin unit 2, Addition and Subtraction.
Thematic
This week, the children started their new thematic topic, ‘Across the Pond.’ They will be learning about North America and spending time comparing the topography to that of the UK. In the first lesson, the children learnt about the origins of North America and how certain states were named after their founders. Following this, the children worked in groups to map out key North American countries. On Friday, the children participated in an art carousel. They travelled through the year 5 classrooms and studied a different North American artist and even produced a mini art piece for each one too! Next week, the children will delve into the topography of North America!
The caterpillars arrived in year 5! The children will be studying their life cycles and once we have butterflies, they will release them into the wild. This links to our science learning for the term.
