3.10.25 Year 5 Weekly News
Term 1 Week 6
English
This week, the children wrote a letter to Mrs Ebbel from future Bradley. The children imagined how Bradley’s life had turned out and decided to share the positive news with his former teacher. It was an emotive and thoughtful piece of writing. Next week, the children are reading ‘The Lady of Shallot.’ They are going to be creating a descriptive poem linking to the text.
Maths
This week, the children used column addition and subtraction. They learnt how to problem solve with this method by finding missing digits and deciding where a mistake occurred. Next week, they are starting their unit on line graphs.
Thematic
This week, the children wrote a geographical report about the differences between North America and the UK. The children used this opportunity to showcase their learning across the term. During the week, both classes went to Monkton Nature Reserve to look at the life cycle of different animals and plants. It was a fantastic day out for the children! They learnt about insect life cycles, looked at exo-skeletons, hunted for leaves and berries and even looked inside the bat cave!
Art Competition
Term 1’s Art Competition is inspired by Henri Rousseau and his famous Jungle paintings. Rousseau’s work often captured dreamlike visions filled with exotic plants, wild animals, and imaginative scenes. Now it’s your turn to do the same!
Your task is to create an artwork in any medium (painting, drawing, digital art, collage, or mixed media) that communicates a dream you have had – just as Rousseau brought his dreams to life through his Jungle scenes. The deadline is the end of Term 1 and you must submit your artwork to Mr Mason. Winners and selected works will be featured in a special exhibition in Term 2.
Let your imagination roam free – whether your dream takes place in a jungle, under the sea, or on another planet, we can’t wait to see it come alive in your art!
