Term 2 Week 1

PD Day

What a fantastic PD Day we had! The children really engaged with the topic of protected characteristics, focusing particularly on race, religion, and disability. It was inspiring to see them collaborate and express their thoughts and feelings through art. Each class worked together to create a unique art piece that represented their chosen characteristic, showcasing their creativity and understanding. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as they shared their ideas and learnt from one another. It was a brilliant opportunity for the kids to celebrate diversity and foster inclusivity, reinforcing the importance of respect and empathy in our school community.

English

This week in year 5, we embarked on an exciting journey with our new text, Cosmic. To set the scene, we painted stunning nebulae, which served as a fantastic stimulus for crafting our setting descriptions. The vibrant colours and swirling patterns really ignited the children’s imaginations! To make their writing even more engaging, we focused on using ISPACE openers—such as ‘In the distance’ and ‘Suddenly’—to vary their sentences and enhance their descriptions. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine through. Next week, we are writing a narrative about an event that went wrong!

Maths

This week in year 5, we kicked off our unit on multiplication and division! It's been quite the adventure as we dove into the world of factors and multiples. The children have shown great enthusiasm, and it's wonderful to see their faces light up when they grasp these concepts. We've also taken a closer look at prime numbers, which has sparked some intriguing discussions. Next week, we are continuing our journey with multiplication by exploring some formal methods.

Thematic

During the afternoons this week, our classes have delved into the important topics of discrimination and bullying. To actively express their understanding, the children created vibrant posters that advocate against these issues. It was heartening to see their creativity and passion shine through! We also explored the impact of stereotypes and, as a personal reflection, they each wrote poems to identify who they are and how they feel. These activities not only empowered the students to voice their thoughts but also fostered a deeper sense of empathy and awareness within our classroom.
