23.1.26 Year 5 Weekly News
Term 3 Week 3
English
This week, the children have been diligently engaged in writing a newspaper report inspired by an event from our current text, Anglo-Saxon Boy. They have demonstrated commendable effort in incorporating relative clauses and employing reported speech, thereby enhancing the sophistication of their writing. This exercise not only reinforces their understanding of narrative structure but also cultivates their ability to convey information in a formal context.
Looking ahead to next week, the children will continue their exploration of newspaper reports while transitioning to the creation of an internal monologue from the perspective of the exiled character. This task will encourage them to delve deeper into character development and emotional expression, fostering a greater understanding of narrative voice and perspective. We anticipate that this will further enrich their writing skills and creative thinking.
Maths
This week, the children have been engaged in the exploration of various angles, enhancing their understanding through the practical application of protractors to measure angles accurately. This hands-on experience has not only solidified their comprehension of angle measurement but has also fostered a greater appreciation for geometric concepts. Next week, the students will continue this mathematical journey by delving into the intricacies of angles around a point and angles on a straight line. This progression will further enrich their knowledge and skills in geometry, preparing them for more advanced mathematical challenges.

Thematic
This week, the children engaged in an enriching exploration of the different Kingdoms during the Anglo-Saxon period. The highlight of the week was WOW Day, where the students delved into the properties of materials utilised in Anglo-Saxon farming. In collaborative groups, they constructed model farms, fostering teamwork and creativity.
In the afternoon, the children had the opportunity to recreate Anglo-Saxon jewellery using clay and decorative jewels, allowing them to connect with the artistic practices of the era. Additionally, the students embarked on an educational visit to Canterbury Cathedral. During the tour, they re-enacted the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in England, which provided a vivid historical context for their learning. The children were delighted to dress in period costumes, further immersing themselves in the experience.
In the activity room, they practised their writing skills by using quills to inscribe their names, an exercise that enhanced their appreciation for historical writing methods. Furthermore, they created their own Canterbury cross brooches and coloured stained glass window designs, culminating in a week filled with hands-on learning and historical engagement.
