One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 19.09.25

We couldn’t begin our weekly blog without celebrating our incredible afternoon at the Colour Run! It was an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, colour, and community spirit. A huge thank you to all the parents who joined us—your presence helped make the afternoon truly special and full of cherished memories for our Upton family.

This Week in Year 6...

English

The children have continued to thoroughly enjoy our English text of the term, Floodland. This week, they worked exceptionally hard on writing a setting description of the cathedral. They began by sketching their own visualisations and then generated ambitious vocabulary and figurative language to create vivid imagery for the reader. The creativity and effort shown have been fantastic! The children also had the opportunity to visit the library in their reading session Friday to explore the range of books in school. Next week the children will be developing their use of figurative language to write a speech for one of the key characters in our English text – Floodland.

Maths

In Maths, we’ve been building on our understanding of rounding numbers to a required degree of accuracy. We also explored efficient methods of addition and subtraction, applying these strategies in a variety of contexts. Next week, we’ll be diving into multiplication and division, continuing to strengthen our number fluency.

Thematic Curriculum

This week in our thematic learning, we explored Charles Darwin’s voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle. Using atlases and Google Maps, the children plotted his journey and investigated some of his key scientific discoveries. A highlight was learning about the adaptation of finches across the Galápagos Islands, and how their beaks evolved depending on the available food sources. The children showed great curiosity and engagement throughout!

Term 1 Art competition

Term 1’s Art Competition is inspired by Henri Rousseau and his famous Jungle paintings. Rousseau’s work often captured dreamlike visions filled with exotic plants, wild animals, and imaginative scenes. Now it’s your turn to do the same!
Your task is to create an artwork in any medium (painting, drawing, digital art, collage, or mixed media) that communicates a dream you have had – just as Rousseau brought his dreams to life through his Jungle scenes. The deadline is the end of Term 1 and you must submit your artwork to Mr Mason. Winners and selected works will be featured in a special exhibition in Term 2.

Let your imagination roam free – whether your dream takes place in a jungle, under the sea, or on another planet, we can’t wait to see it come alive in your art!

Homework

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with times table knowledge.

- Children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
