Year 6 Weekly News – 6th February 2026
We’ve had another inspiring, engaging and productive week in Year 6, filled with creativity, challenge and plenty of smiles!
⭐ Number Day
Number Day provided a fantastic and energetic end to our penultimate week of term. The day began with an exciting interactive assembly led by Miss Prescott, before the children moved on to a wonderful variety of mathematical activities. They created and played their own maths games, explored volume through building block constructions, and took part in many other hands‑on tasks that brought number learning to life.
📚 English
In English, the children have continued to delve deeper into Skellig, exploring key characters and examining how ideas and themes are woven throughout the text. This week, they completed detailed characterisations of Skellig and began re‑writing part of a chapter—specifically the scene in which Michael dreams about Skellig. Their creativity and insight have been impressive to see.
➗ Maths
In maths, the children have been developing their understanding of finding the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes. They have also been applying this knowledge to a range of reasoning and problem‑solving challenges. Alongside this, they continue to strengthen their arithmetic fluency—an essential life‑long skill.
🌍 Thematic Learning
Our thematic learning has remained as hands‑on and engaging as ever. This week, the children explored the links between exercise and the effects it has on the body. Combining science with PE, they observed first-hand how physical activity impacts heart rate, breathing and overall wellbeing. There were certainly plenty of red faces by the end!
Term 4 Art competition
We are excited to announce our next school art competition, and this time we’re taking inspiration from one of the most energetic and expressive artists of all time — Jackson Pollock!
Jackson Pollock was famous for his bold, abstract paintings created by dripping, splashing, and pouring paint rather than carefully brushing it on. His work reminds us that art isn’t always about drawing something recognisable — it’s about movement, emotion, and creativity. There are no strict rules, just freedom to explore!
Your task is to create an original piece of artwork inspired by Jackson Pollock’s style. Think about:
- Movement and energy
- Lines, splashes, drips, and layers
- How colours interact and overlap
- Expressing feeling through marks rather than pictures
You can use any suitable materials at home or school, as long as your work clearly shows inspiration from Pollock’s approach.
All artwork must be clearly labelled on the back you’re your name and class. Completed pieces should be brought to Mr Mason’s art room and the deadline is the next art assembly.
We can’t wait to see the exciting, energetic, and colourful artwork you create. Let loose, have fun, and remember — there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to make art inspired by Jackson Pollock!
Homework Reminders
Thank you for continuing to support your child with the following expectations:
📖 Reading
Please read with your child at least three times per week.
All children have a ZPD to guide them in choosing books at the right level. After finishing a book, they should complete an Accelerated Reader quiz before selecting their next one. Quizzes can be taken at home or at school via the link below:
