One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 13th January 2026

Poetry fills the corridors of Upton…

The highlight of this week has been the Poetry Recital on Thursday afternoon. All seven learning groups delivered fantastic performances to their peers and parents alike. The poems performed were:

  • 6BSaw My Teacher on a Saturday by Dave Crawley
  • 6GGran, Can You Rap? by Jack Ousbey
  • 6RJust a Book? by Joshua Seigal
  • 6YThe Visitor by Ian Serraillier
  • Mr Rowe’s Learning GroupScissors by Allan Ahlberg
  • Miss Scarr’s Learning GroupThe Schoolkids’ Rap by John Foster
  • Mr Kettle’s Learning GroupThe Magic Box by Kit Wright

The children’s performances showed excellent intonation, confidence, and passion. All the adults are incredibly proud of their hard work and delivery.

English

This week, the children continued reading Skellig and developed their understanding of the text by exploring inference, linking ideas across chapters, and deepening their awareness of the author’s intent. The children also completed their dream‑sequence writing and produced both a letter and a diary entry based on our key characters, Michael and Skellig.
We will continue with Skellig after the half‑term break.

Maths

In Maths this week, the children deepened their knowledge of time and related problems, as well as converting between imperial and metric units of measure. They worked incredibly hard to tackle a wide range of questions, drawing on known facts and a broad range of mathematical skills.
When we return, the children will explore several new themes over the first three weeks of the term before beginning our revision cycle in preparation for the statutory tests in May.

Thematic

This week, the children have been focusing on their RE learning. They have been exploring Islam, with particular attention to significant Muslims and their contributions. The children also completed adaptive quizzes to assess their understanding of this term’s thematic learning. Any gaps identified have been addressed through targeted top‑up teaching sessions.

Homework

  • Reading: Please read with your child at least three times a week.
  • Accelerated Reader: Children have a ZPD to guide book choices. After finishing a book, they should complete a quiz (in school or at home via Accelerated Reader using their login details).
  • Times Tables: Play TTRS at least three times a week to build fluency.
  • Mathletics: Homework set — due Friday.
  • Thematic Homework: The homework menu for our new thematic unit will be posted in the first week of Term 4.
  • Spellings: Choose 10 spellings each week to practise using the strategy shown in their spelling book.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy the half‑term break!
