One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News – 27th February 2026

A fantastic first week back!

We’ve had a brilliant start to the new half-term, and the children have returned full of energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to…

English

This week, Year 6 continued exploring Skellig, diving deeper into the story and unpicking the symbolism woven through the text. The children have been sharpening their inference skills and thinking carefully about how authors create meaning beneath the surface.

Alongside this, we’ve focused on punctuation — particularly how to use colons and semi-colons accurately and confidently. In their writing, the children stepped into the shoes of Skellig himself, reflecting on how meeting Michael and Mina begins to transform his physical form, his emotions, and his mindset. They have shown real maturity in building atmosphere and portraying character change.

Maths

In Maths, we’ve been exploring geometry, including reflections, translations, and the properties of shapes. The children have been applying their knowledge through reasoning tasks to build their confidence and deepen their understanding — essential skills as they prepare for their Year 6 SATs and beyond.

Thematic Learning – Personal Development Week

Our first week included a strong focus on PSHE, linking to this term’s theme: Relationships.

During PD Day, the children explored:

  • Kindness and positive relationships, and how we can strengthen these every day
  • Online relationships and e-safety, learning how to navigate interactions safely and responsibly
  • Inspiration in sport, including discovering the work of Alice Wallace, founder of the Mintridge Foundation, which supports girls of all abilities in sport

The children contributed thoughtfully and showed great maturity throughout the discussions.

Homework Reminders

  • Reading: Please read with your child at least three times a week.
  • Accelerated Reader: Children should choose books within their ZPD range and complete a quiz after finishing each book (in school or at home).
  • Times Tables: TTRS at least three times a week.
  • Mathletics: This week’s task is set and due Friday.
  • Thematic Homework: Our new WW2-themed homework menu is now available — we’re excited for a rich two-term project!
  • Spellings: Choose 10 spellings each week and practise using the strategy shown in their spelling journal.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Have a wonderful weekend!
