Year 6 Weekly News – 6th March 2026
What a great week...
This has certainly been a week packed full of activity for Year 6. The week began with the children completing their familiarisation SATs tests, showcasing the hard work and commitment they have demonstrated throughout the year. They showed great focus and resilience, and the Year 6 team were thoroughly impressed by their strong work ethic.
In contrast to the tests, the children had an amazing day celebrating World Book Day on Thursday. There were so many wonderful costumes, a brilliant array of languages on show, and fantastic enthusiasm during all the activities. Thank you to our parental community for your support in making the day so memorable. The children spent the morning exploring vocabulary, reading with Year 3 pupils, and taking part in an interactive assembly — guessing the identities of the masked readers!
English
This week, Year 6 continued exploring Skellig and are now very nearly at the end of the book. The children examined how some of the events and characters were influenced by the poet William Blake. In their writing, they produced a letter from Michael to his baby sister for her to read in the future. Their letters explained the emotional rollercoaster of her arrival into the world, how Michael met Skellig and then Mina, and how these two characters shaped him over time.
Maths
In Maths, we have continued to explore geometry, including reflections, translations, and the properties of shapes. The children have been applying their knowledge through reasoning tasks to build confidence and deepen understanding — essential skills as they prepare for their Year 6 SATs and beyond.
Thematic Learning
This week, the children began their new Thematic topic: World War Two, which will continue throughout Terms 4 and 5. They started by securing their understanding of the events that led to the start of the war.
