Important Messages and Dates:
Here is a message from our Head of Year 6:

Quex Park Trip - 6G/6R Wednesday 14th October 6Y/6B Thursday 15th October
Next week, Year 6 will be visiting the Powell Cotton Museum at Quex Park. We will need to leave school early, so please can the children be at school at 8:20am. We will be getting the train to Birchington and then walking to Quex park from the station. Please can the children please bring: A packed lunch (please contact the school office if you require a school lunch), a bag for their lunch, water and a coat. The children will need to be in full school uniform. We will return to school at the end of the school day.
Outside play
At Upton, play is incredibly important and we want our children to be able to experience every part of our outdoor provision. Please can we ask that children come to school with named wellies that they can leave at school, alongside a waterproof jacket. Our children are outside in all weathers every day.
Usernames and passwords
TTRS and AR levels are placed on a sticker on / inside their reading records
Home Learning
At Upton, our expectation for home learning is to read 3 times a week at home. We would like the children to bring their signed reading records into school daily so that these can be signed by their class teacher. Reading is incredibly important, especially as we get the children ready for the next stage of their education. We also ask that the children practise times tables regularly at home.
Thank you for your support. Please contact us if you have any questions, worries or to tell us of any success that your child experiences outside of school!

English
Debate filled our reading and writing learning this week in Year 6. We spent time debating who would make the better leader: Dooby or Zoe. The children were extremely passionate with their ideas and reasons. After debating their choices with each other, they planned and wrote their own speech – writing as their chosen leader. We have also finished our book; Floodland and our Year 6 children can not wait to find out what happens. In reading this week, we spent time using our reading retrieval skills for comprehension, made some justified predictions and spent Friday sharing our love of reading in a Reading for Pleasure session. In spelling this week, we have revisited spelling words with ‘i before e’ and in our punctuation and grammar lessons, we focused on coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences.
Maths
We worked hard in maths this week, focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10,100,1000, known facts when multiplying and short multiplication (fluency) and multiplication word problems. We will move on to long multiplication and then dividing,
Thematic
This week Year 6 learnt about microorganisms, focusing on bacteria and fungi. They made illustrated information guides, and took part in a science experiment looking at yeast and explored the question: Is yeast a living organism!
