4G - Earthquake Stunning Start
For a Stunning Start for Our Planet topic, 4G created "earthquake proof" buildings.
After looking at how powerful earthquakes can damage buildings and looking at some of the ways engineers can "earthquake proof" buildings, children used cocktail sticks and marshmallows (or blu-tac) to build structures that would survive an earthquake. The 'earthquake' was simulated by placing the structure on to a tray of jelly and wobbling the jelly. The children had a great time and many were able to build superb structures which survived Richter scale 9 'jelly-quakes'.
Later on in the week, the children were tasked with setting up a relief centre for families affected by earthquakes. Children had fun deciding on priorities and making posters and banners.
