One Childhood - One Chance

4B Wow Day!

On Monday, 4B watched a super science presentation and made their own fan powered car.

On Monday, 4B's Wow Day began with a presentation from Fizz Pop. Helen showed us a plasma lamp, which Shelby was lucky enough to test. When Shelby touched the bulb, the plasma was attracted towards her finger as the electricity tried to find the shortest path towards the earth. 4B then held hands in a loop and watched as the electricity flowed through their bodies and lit up a light tube. They then sorted materials into conductors and insulators and found that most metals are conductors but balloons definitely do not conduct electricity. Then, the best part! The Van Der Graaf machine! One at a time, the children (and adults) had a go at putting their hands on the generator and watched what happened to their hair. After a short while, loose pieces of hair began to stand on end as the charged particles in their hair began to repel one another. Poppy Y had a superb result with her hair! Finally, the children used balloons to create a static charge and make their hair stand on end in a different way.

The second part of the day was filled with DT. Each member of 4B made a car from lolly sticks and glue. They made wheels out of card, ensuring they were thick enough by adding layers. To finish off, they made a circuit including a battery, a motor (with a propeller attached) and a switch. This was quite tricky to connect. They attached the circuit to the car to hopefully see their car move.

We had a great day and what a fun way to explore science.
