One Childhood - One Chance

From Blood to Bolognese

As part of their study of the human body, children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs created ‘blood model bottles’.

They used marshmallows, cereal hoops and raisins in liquid to represent red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets and discussed their functions that keep people alive.

As part of their thematic curriculum topic How To Mind Your Heart, the Year 6 pupils also immersed themselves in the fascinating world of anatomy and enjoyed a range of other hands-on experiences and engaging activities.

These included witnessing the dissection of an ox and a pig heart to solidify their understanding of the organ and how it works. This led to them creating their own t-shirts depicting the human circulatory system.

A change of focus in the design and technology element of their studies saw the group taste a range of shop-bought Bolognese sauces before planning to create their own.

Utilising the catering facilities and expert staff at the Royal Harbour Academy in Ramsgate, they practised a range of knife skills and learnt how to safely use a cooking hob. They created and tasted their own healthy version of the vegetable-based sauce.

Head of Year 6 Katie Vary said: “This was a memorable journey of hands-on learning. From interactive experiments to creative projects, pupils have been fully engaged in bringing their lessons to life.

“Through exploration and collaboration, they’ve deepened their understanding and developed a true love for learning.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
