Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core
This term in Year 4 we are exploring plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes - how they are formed, where they are found and the consequences of them. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term. We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.
English:
In English this week we wrote a newspaper report about the eruption of Mount Pelée, a volcano located on the Caribbean island of Martinique. Over 30,000 people were killed in the eruption. We focused on including quotes using direct and indirect speech.
Next week, we will write our own disaster narrative based on an earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Maths:
This week in maths we continued our fractions unit. We found equivalent fractions, fractions of quantities and looked at fractions linked with division.
Next week we will compare fractions and explore mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week during our afternoon lessons, we discussed the positives and negatives of living near a volcano and took part in some drama in role as a person living near a volcano that one day erupts. We used atlases and globes to locate lines of latitude and longitude as well as the locations of some volcanoes and earthquakes around the world.
Next week we will use compass points to locate earthquake and volcanic activity as well as compare the UK to Pompeii. We will also begin our DT sessions.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Reading Parent Engage session on Thursday afternoon. It was lovely seeing all the children immersed in a book and engaging in discussions about what they have read. Here are some photos of the session.
